Organization For Transformative Works - What Is Your Current Favorite Fandom?
(July Instagram Post)
For my first project as an OTW volunteer, I designed the graphics used for their July Instagram post. Our goal on the Instagram team is to encourage interaction and education about the two primary platforms, AO3 and Fanlore, through monthly community posts.
Step #1 - Asking the Question
For July, our theme was "What is your current favorite fandom?" and centered around AO3. We started by asking this question on our Instagram stories and then gathering the data based on the responses.
Step #2 - Brainstorming
Once our data was gathered, I began to brainstorm how to present this information. OTW and AO3 use a monochromatic red color scheme for most of their posts, so I wanted to create something that felt cohesive with their existing visual style.
I started by sketching out a few thumbnails of possible design styles. Ultimately we decided on design #3, determining that the question marks should draw attention to the post.
Step #3 - Final Designs and Presenting Data
My goal for the design was to make sure it was legible. Red, white, and black color schemes can sometimes be harsh, so I wanted to lean into cooler crimson colors instead of hot firetruck reds. I also layered a spiral metallic pattern on the design to help break up the colors and add visual interest.
Additionally, to keep the text from feeling flat, I decided on 3 different font types to draw attention to each line of text. Bolded words highlight the importance of the subject.
