Washing Machine Heart - Lyric Video
From the moment I first heard Washing Machine Heart by Mitski, I was hooked by the story she was telling and knew I had to create something with it.
Reflection on the Creative Process
This was the biggest project I had tackled at the time, previously I had only made 30 second videos, such as my James Bond project. On shorter projects I tended to just go with the flow and figure out each scene in the moment, but for a lyric video I knew I needed more preparation.
Step One: Storyboarding --thankfully Mitski's lyrics are so vivid it was easy to craft illustrations to tell a story.
Step Two: Illustrating--This process was tricky since it was my first time creating images in illustrator that I would then import into After Effects. I had to think about the images in layers and what parts I would want to animate, something I had never considered when crating static illustrations.
Step Three: Animation-- I'll admit, a lot of this was experimental and trial and error. There were still so many tools I was unfamiliar with and I often spent more time watching YouTube tutorials rather than animating.
Reference Images and Illustrations
Just one illustration wouldn't do to capture the feelings I had inside when I heard this song! And, a picture is worth a thousand words, so I decided to make at least a dozen illustrations and create a lyric video to get my vision across.
